How Orevant uses EPA SDWIS
Orevant is built on official public records, not a private score. This page is the source note for how we read the EPA Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) and what we will not invent.
What SDWIS is
SDWIS is EPA’s national inventory of public water systems. It holds system profiles, violation history, sanitary survey records, and facility inventories. State primacy agencies also keep files. Those two sets do not always match in time.
What we pull
From EPA SDWIS / Envirofacts:
- System profile (name, PWSID, classification, population, source)
- Violation history, with the retrieval date on every finding
- Sanitary survey records
- Facility inventory
We also read 40 CFR Part 141 and related federal rules, state primacy programs, the Federal Register, and a curated funding catalog plus a live Grants.gov feed screened for drinking water. See About and Coverage.
When we pull it
Search runs on a local mirror of the EPA SDWIS registry, re-synced monthly, so a lookup is fast when federal services are slow. Live records are pulled at scan time for a Complete System Report. Every finding shows its source and retrieval date.
What we will not claim
- If we cannot point at the regulation, we do not say it.
- When the record cannot confirm something, the finding says Unable to Verify. That is not a violation.
- Federal databases can trail state files by a quarter or more. Reports say so.
- Orevant does not submit records, tasks, findings, or applications to agencies. We do not report your system to the state.

Is SDWIS the same as my state file?
No. SDWIS is the federal inventory. Your state can be ahead or behind. We disclose that lag.
